Setting up the ideal chicken coop: space, roosts & ventilation

As the owner of Kippenpakket.nl, I know better than anyone how important it is to perfectly furnish your chicken coop. A healthy and happy chicken life begins with a well-equipped coop. In this blog, I'd like to share my expertise on the essential elements for the ideal chicken coop.

Space for your chickens

The first and perhaps most important factor is the space in your chicken coop. Chickens need enough room to move around to feel comfortable. As a rule of thumb, you should have at least 0.5 square meters of floor space per adult chicken in the coop. Also, keep in mind that you'll need extra space for nests, perches, and food and water feeders.

In addition to the floor area, the height of the coop is also important. Chickens need at least 40 centimeters of clear space above their heads when sitting on the perch. So, make sure your coop is tall enough so your chickens don't feel cramped.

Furnishing the chicken coop

Now that you know how much space your chickens need, it's time to furnish the coop. In addition to sufficient room to move, there are a few other essential elements to consider:

Perches

Chickens love to sleep on an elevated perch. Make sure you place enough perches so all your chickens can sleep comfortably. Allow for at least 15 centimeters of perch per chicken. The perches must be sturdy and stable so your chickens can sit on them safely.
