Top 7 Chicken Keeping Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)
Deel
As the owner of Kippenpakket.nl, an online store specializing in the best quality feed, snacks, and supplements for healthy and happy chickens, I have a lot of experience keeping chickens. Over the years, I've seen many common mistakes made by novice chicken keepers. In this blog, I share the top 7 mistakes and how to avoid them.
1. Insufficient space for the chickens
One of the most common mistakes is underestimating the space chickens need. Chickens not only need enough ground area to scratch around but also vertical space for sleeping on perches. If you keep chickens in an enclosure or coop that is too small, they can develop stress and health problems.
The rule of thumb is to provide at least 4 square meters of ground area per chicken. In addition, there must be sufficient height, at least 50 cm, so that the chickens can sit comfortably on perches. Also, make sure the run or coop is well-ventilated.
Solution:
Measure the available space in advance and determine how many chickens you can keep at most. Choose a run or coop that is spacious enough for your flock. Get advice from an experienced chicken keeper or consult our online guide for ideal dimensions.
2. Incorrect feeding
Many novice chicken keepers underestimate the importance of a balanced diet for their chickens. Chickens need specific nutrients for optimal health and egg production. Incorrect feeding can lead to health problems, reduced egg production, and even premature death.
Solution:
Always use a complete, good-quality chicken feed, supplemented with healthy snacks and supplements. Ensure your chickens get enough protein, calcium, vitamins, and minerals. Follow the feeding recommendations on the packaging and adjust quantities based on the age and production of your chickens.
3. Insufficient shelter
Chickens need not only space but also sufficient shelter from sun, rain, and wind. An open run or coop without hiding places can lead to stress and health problems for your chickens.
Solution:
Provide a covered area in the run or coop where the chickens can seek shelter. Also, place several perches at different heights so that the chickens can choose where they want to sit. Also, consider planting some shrubs or trees in the run for extra shade and shelter.
4. Insufficient nesting opportunities
Laying hens have a natural urge to lay eggs in a nest. If you provide insufficient nesting opportunities, the chickens can experience stress and lay their eggs in unwanted places.
Solution:
Place at least one nest box per 4-5 chickens. The nests should be comfortable, dark, and sheltered. Use soft nesting materials such as wood shavings or straw. Regularly check that the nests remain clean and attractive for your chickens.
5. Poor hygiene
Like humans, chickens need a clean and hygienic living environment. Insufficient cleaning of the run or coop can lead to diseases, parasites, and reduced egg quality.
Solution:
Clean the run or coop thoroughly at least once a week. Remove all manure, soiled litter, and clean the surfaces. Provide plenty of fresh, dry bedding. Regularly disinfect with a special chicken coop disinfectant to kill germs.
6. Insufficient protection against predators
Chickens are unfortunately a beloved snack for various predators such as foxes, martens, and birds of prey. If you do not sufficiently protect your chickens, you run the risk of them falling prey to these threats.
Solution:
Provide a well-secured run or coop with a sturdy frame and wire mesh that is also installed on top. Dig the wire mesh at least 30 cm deep into the ground to prevent predators from digging underneath. Also, install deterrents such as flashlights or motion sensors to keep predators at bay.
7. Lack of social interaction
Chickens are social animals that need contact with their peers. If you keep chickens in isolation or in groups that are too small, they can develop stress and behavioral problems.
Solution:
Always keep chickens in groups of at least 3-4 animals. Ensure a good social structure in the group by putting chickens of different ages and breeds together. Observe interactions and intervene in aggressive behavior. Also, provide plenty of toys and distractions to fulfill your chickens' social needs.
