Why choose Rubber Nest Egg?
- Encourages nesting behavior — shows your hen where she should lay her eggs
- Discourages egg pecking — hens that peck and eat eggs will discover there's nothing to gain from the rubber egg
- Durable material — sturdy rubber that withstands pecking well and lasts a long time
- Handy tool — also useful for checking if a hen is broody
Our experience
We had a hen that would peck and eat her own eggs. We tried everything until we placed a rubber egg in the nest. She pecked at it quite a bit at first—resulting in some dents, but with no success. We consistently collected the real eggs and left the rubber egg. After a while, she realized there was nothing to be gained from that egg and stopped pecking at her eggs.
Who is this suitable for?
Suitable for all chicken breeds — for hens that lay outside the nesting box, or peck and eat eggs.
Usage
- Place the rubber egg in your hen's nesting box
- Collect real eggs as soon as possible, so only the rubber egg remains
- Clean the egg with hot or warm water when it gets dirty
- Tip: does your hen lay brown eggs? Choose the brown fake egg for the most recognizable result possible
Additional advice from our chicken experts
If your hen continues to peck out of boredom despite the rubber egg, also check out our Pecking Pot for extra distraction, and make the nesting box extra appealing with Nest Herbs. Also ensure sufficient Oyster Grit, as a calcium deficiency can also be a reason why hens peck at their own eggs.
